Martine Franck's documentary photography stands as a poignant exploration of both the visible and invisible aspects of society. Her work oscillated between capturing the lives of renowned artists and shedding light on marginalized communities, particularly the elderly. In her project Le Temps de Vieillir (A Time to Grow Old), Franck's empathetic lens captured the often-overlooked realities of aging, offering a tender yet determined portrayal of the elderly. Her images emphasize not just the fragility of life, but also the dignity and resilience found in the humblest corners of society. Franck's work invites reflection on the passing of time and the quiet struggles of those who are frequently unseen, making her a powerful voice in the tradition of humanistic documentary photography.
Franck’s Le Temps de Vieillir inspired me to document my grandmother through an intimate and observational approach. I was drawn to the way Franck photographed aging with honesty and tenderness, focusing on quiet moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. Her work influenced me to look beyond traditional portraiture and instead capture my grandmother naturally within her everyday environment. Through this series, I wanted to preserve small gestures, routines, expressions, and details that reflect her personality and the passage of time.
